Walk and Talk

The physical and mental health benefits of ‘Shinrin-yoku’ or ‘forest bathing’ – simply spending time in green spaces, are evident to many of us and  shown by numerous studies. There are beautiful outdoor spaces close by, should you wish to explore this method of counselling with me. The sounds, scents, textures and sights of the environment can be grounding and remind us of our connection to nature.

Walking and talking is a refreshing change from counselling services that take place in a room. The rhythm of our steps and witnessing nature going about its business help to bring a new energy to therapy.

Walking side by side can also be helpful for people less comfortable with eye contact.

Online

Online counselling may first appear to some people to be less personal, more distant. I remember worrying that this may be the case at the start of the pandemic. However, it can be just as rewarding, secure and successful as face-to-face work. Many people prefer this method of therapy. As always, my aim is to make you feel comfortable, to maintain safety and confidentiality and ultimately support you as you find your inner tools to help you move forward.

It can help to meet in person before embarking on online work. Wherever possible, I will aim to do this with you before we begin.

Creative

Creativity hands us new ways to investigate the experiences that are difficult to put into words. Words don’t always come easily when talking about emotional topics. Working creatively can help us communicate when words cannot. We may use therapy cards, drawing, sculpting, painting, writing, music, sounds – I’ll be guided by where your imagination takes you. Our focus will be on the process of creating than the final piece; the feel of the pencils or paint, the resonance of the colours, how the body and mind move and feel during the work.

Breathe

These humble practices can be life changing.
A pause to meditate, can bring us back to the present moment, allow us new perspectives on the challenges in our lives and gift us the space to work organically to overcome them.

Simply focussing on our breath and noticing how it changes with various emotions can prompt us to recognise our present state. We can learn to use breath as an important tool to centre and rebalance.

Often our bodily sensations can alert us to an issue within our psyche before we are conscious of it or help us to identify an emotion.

Guided relaxation may involve visualising goals, creating a safe space to explore, away from the weight of the world or a way to centre and ground us.

Be assured that we will always work at a pace that suits you and I will be guided by what is comfortable for you.
